ABOUT KSCMMC


Coir, also known as 'The Golden Fibre', is extracted from the husk of coconut and it is found between the hard internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. Coir is widely used for making various products such as floor mats, Outdoor mats, Cordage , ropes, aquarium filters etc. Prior to these, Coir being the geo textiles come in a mind boggling range of woven & Non woven varities available for bio engineering including geo meshes, geo grids, anti-weed blankets, erosion control blankets, geo-rolls, geo-webs, and fascines.


Coir Industry is an important agro based employment oriented traditional cottage industry in india. The History of coir in India started with the association of Kerala State which dates back to 19th century. Between the western Ghats on the east & Arabian Sea on the west,, Kerala is a tropical paradise of waving coconut palms and wide sandy beaches. 


This thin strip of coastal territory slopes down from the mountain ghats in a cascade of lush green vegetation & varied fauna. Kerala is one of the most beautiful states of India and also the largest producer of Coir & Coir products in India. In fact even the name 'Keralam ' means 'Land of Coconut' in Malayalam. Coir industry enjoys the status as the largest cottage industry in the state of Kerala giving employment to over a million of people.


Alleppey, (Alappuzha) is the nerve centre of coir industry in Kerala. India established its first coir industry in Alleppey in 1859 by the Late Mr. James Darrah. The coir extraction technique in Kerala is a craft developed, perfected and mastered through generations, with Alappuzha being the centre of coir production. 



A land where coir making is a way of life, Alappuzha is where the finest Coir in the World is produced, processed and woven into high-quality fibre products that are exported across the Globe. The availability of plenty of raw materials and the existence of backwaters and canals suitable for the getting of green husk and accessibility of transportation are the main factors of the development of this industry in Alleppey.
